DC United Sold (Finally)

Well this would be in the breaking news category. United Sale Complete:

The long-awaited sale of D.C. United's operating rights by Colorado billionaire Phil Anschutz's sports and entertainment company has been completed, club officials said today.

The purchasing group -- which includes United President Kevin Payne and former Duke basketball player Brian Davis -- will be introduced Monday morning at a news conference attended by MLS Commissioner Don Garber, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty (D) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.).

Discovery Communications founder John Hendricks and real estate developer Victor MacFarlane are also involved in the team's new investment group, sources said. United has plans for a 27,000-seat stadium at Poplar Point along the Anacostia River, a project that would also include commercial and residential development
.

Hopefully, this will bring an even greater sense of stability to United. (Although, by MLS standards DC fans have had it pretty easy.) Over at DCenters the thought is that most of the big off-season signings would be held up until the ownership group was in place. If that is so, we should see more acquisitions sooner rather than later.

Good news.
